Zoom elevates education with built-in AI tools for teaching, learning, and administration
This week at EDUCAUSE 2025, Zoom is showcasing how Zoom Workplace for Education with AI Companion is transforming higher education institutions by bringing real-time support, personalized learning tools, and powerful automation directly into the tools educators and students already use.
Zoom AI Companion is embedded across Zoom Workplace for Education, from Zoom Meetings to Zoom Team Chat, Zoom Docs, and Zoom Whiteboard. It provides lecture summaries, automated meeting notes, custom study guides, live transcriptions, and language translations, enabling and engaging students, reducing administrative burden for educators, and fostering a more inclusive, flexible learning environment.
“Educators are under pressure to do more with less, and students need learning experiences that are accessible, personalized, and available anytime. We’ve seen AI Companion become an indispensable teaching assistant that supports lesson planning, reduces administrative workload, and helps students stay connected and informed, whether they’re learning in person or online,” said Ritu Mukherjee, Head of Product, Business Acceleration, and Readiness at Zoom.
Included at no extra cost in paid Zoom Workplace for Education plans, AI Companion supports a wide range of educational use cases:
- Hybrid, hyflex, and virtual learning: Faculty can deliver live or recorded lessons and use the Lecture Summary feature, integrated with their LMS, to capture them for future review and student access at any time.
- Student support: AI Companion generates personalized study guides and can answer questions based on class content before, during, and after class. Students can use the forthcoming AI note-taking features during lectures to stay focused on their instructor while AI Companion automatically captures and organizes notes.
- Collaboration tools: Educators and students can co-create using Zoom Whiteboard, which enables AI-powered brainstorming and visual mapping. Zoom Docs offers a next-generation, AI-powered surface with built-in, education-specific prompts that help teachers and students collaborate more effectively.
- Administrative efficiency: Staff can use AI Companion for scheduling, curriculum planning, and automated meeting summaries.
Zoom AI Companion 3.0, the next generation of AI Companion with evolved agentic capabilities, will be available to Zoom Workplace for Education customers in early 2026. With AI Companion 3.0, teachers can leverage agentic AI to take the busywork out of instruction preparation. They can use deep research or the writing assistant to generate and customize lesson plans by referencing previous lectures, their own organizational knowledge bases, reference materials, and third-party apps. AI Companion 3.0 will also be available on the web, giving users an agentic AI solution to help them with writing, researching, and developing workflows to complete tasks in their web browser.
With the Custom AI Companion add-on, users can eliminate friction in their teaching and learning journeys by using agentic third-party connectors to take actions on their behalf. Zoom is launching an Instructure Canvas LMS connector to access schedules or post announcements and assignments in the right Canvas course page, right from the AI Companion surface.
Zoom is also simplifying how institutions manage educational video content at scale and empowering learners’ access to such content at any time and on any compatible device. With the recent launch of Zoom Video Management, schools and universities can easily manage, edit, and distribute lecture recordings, professional development sessions, and other video projects across departments on a single platform. Video Management supports the following capabilities:
- Hands-free lecture capture: Automatically record and publish lectures via Zoom Rooms, with dedicated video channels per class fully integrated with LMS systems such as Canvas, Brightspace, Moodle, and Blackboard, and others with LTI 1.3.
- Inclusivity for a variety of learning needs: Built-in closed captions, transcriptions, and translations (with the Translated Captions Add-On), and variable playback speeds support flexible and inclusive learning.
- AI Companion integration: AI Companion helps improve learning outcomes with smart chapters and video summaries, and, coming soon, AI-based quizzes and deep AI-based search will make it easy for instructors and students to create and view asynchronous lecture capture content.
- Engagement Insights: Video viewing metrics inform instructors about student engagement, channel analytics provide insight into videos that are viewed more than others, and an admin-level dashboard provides insights into overall usage.
Zoom has been making meaningful impacts across educational communities for years. One of the latest examples is Stevens Institute of Technology, which was able to tame the “Wild West” of campus communication with Zoom. By introducing Zoom Workplace for Education, Stevens Institute of Technology has transformed student support and supercharged campus-wide collaboration and learning — all while cutting costs and improving user satisfaction.
Another example is Schoolhouse.world, a non-profit tutoring platform that redefines how learners of all ages access high-quality tutoring online. In just five years, it has grown to a community of over 25,000 tutors and 164,000 learners from 180 countries. Schoolhouse.world uses Zoom AI Companion to power live tutoring sessions, improve engagement, and enhance educational outcomes for thousands of learners worldwide.
